Trade and Investment Limpopo (TIL) in partnership with the Department
of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) Limpopo, hosted a
Limpopo Land Seminar on November 18, at Protea Hotel: The Ranch,
Polokwane. Themed Land
Restitution: Balancing Land Ownership and Socio Economic Development,
the Seminar triggered a discussions around the South African Land
Restitution Policy Framework - as it relates to provincial land
restitution and the Spatial Development Plan.
The delegates explored how land restitution affects investment
promotion and trade facilitation, through multi-stakeholder views
on issues affecting land ownership and business competitivess
in Limpopo. The seminar was intended for government departments,
land owners and beneficiaries, business community, non-government
organisations, municipalities, academics as well as farmer unions.
Samuel Thubakgale,
Acting HOD for LEDET
Says TIL Acting CEO, Julius Mapatha, “As a trade promotion
and facilitation agency, TIL views optimum utilization of land
in serious light. We regard land to be a key strategic asset in
attracting and servicing commercial opportunities in relation
to local and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The availability,
ownership and competent use of land is key in agricultural sector
and capital infrastructure development – as well as other
land dependent industries. We look forward to the seminar contributing
to unpacking key policy and business intelligence imperatives;
thus creating an enabling environment for investors and landowners.”
Tele Maphoto, Regional Land Claims Commissioner Limpopo, says
of the seminar: ‘We would like to see the seminar coming
with interventions which will ensure that land restitution projects
are sustainable and contribute to broader rural development objectives
of government.’
